He started Idols and now he is the idol of the entertainment business. Simon Cowell is  the highest earning man on prime-time U.S. television with an annual income of £50million. The figure puts him comfortably ahead of his closest rival Donald Trump.

Cowell is judge and executive producer on American Idol, the most popular programme in the country with an average weekly audience of 27million. He also produces America’s Got Talent.

But the Forbes business magazine list of top earners also takes into account TV stars’ other entertainment-based earnings, meaning his income from music publishing was included.

More than a dozen best-selling artists are signed to Cowell’s Syco record label, including former X Factor winner Leona Lewis and Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts. Other major acts include Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson.

Cowell, 50, brought in the £ 50million between June 2008 and June 2009.

But the figure pales in comparison with that of chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, the highest overall TV earner, who made £162million last year.

The other male entertainers on the top 8 are:

Simon Cowell £50m

Donald Trump (The Apprentice) £ 30m

Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) £23.7m

Charlie Sheen (Two and a half Men) £13.2m

Steve Carell (The Office) £13m

Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal) £ 9.3m

Kiefer Sutherland (24) £ 8.1m

Jeff Foxworthy (Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?) £6.8m
