District 9 gets four Oscar nominations
South Africa has reason to smile after the Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. District 9 has four nods, among them a nomination for the prestigious Best Picture award.
James Cameron’s Avatar has nine nominations, tying with The Hurt Locker, which is directed by his ex-wife Katheryn Bigelow.
District 9 has scored nods for Best Picture, Editing, Visual Effects and Best Adapted Screenplay.
South African-born Neill Blomkamp and partner Terri Tatchell are up for the latter award.
Meanwhile, Invictus picked up two nominations.
Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon are up for Best Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively, for their portrayal of Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar in the movie.
The 1995 rugby world cup-inspired film lost out on Best Picture, but District 9 will be competing alongside Up in the Air, Up, The Blindside, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, An Education, A Serious Man, The Hurt Locker and the best-selling blockbuster Avatar.
