What about a heartwarming gluhwein?

I like to try something new and I stumbled upon this delicious gluhwein recipe. My guests loved it but one old-fart (i.e. not adventurous) was not to keen on trying it. I loved it, you must try it, it is real easy to make.

Recipe: Gluhwein

Serves 4

  • 750 ml red wine
  • 60 ml sugar
  • 2 pieces whole cinnamon
  • 3 whole cloves
  • pinch of ground allspice
  • pinch of ground mace
  • 15 ml brandy
  • 1 orange

Slowly heat the red wine, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, allspice and mace in a saucepan, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.
Add the brandy and heat to just below boiling point.
Using a vegetable peeler, cut strips of orange rind and squeeze out the orange.
Add the orange rind and juice to the hot wine mixture.
Stand for about an hour over very low heat to allow the flavours to develop.
Remove the spices and pour the gluhwein into a flask. Serve warm
